Financial Empowerment Day – Flushing Feb. 25th

AAFE Community Development Fund, in partnership with Renaissance EDC, NYC EDC, OneFlushing, and CHASE, will be hosting a “Financial Empowerment Day” event on Saturday, February 25th 2012.

The event will be hosted at the OneFlushing Economic Development Center’s office in Flushing, NY and will be from 11am-2pm.

Topics for the event will include:

- How to manage your finances and credit.
- How to finance for small business.
- What resources are available to “green” your home.

Korean translation will be available to all attendees.

Flushing ESOL Class – Photo Gallery

AAFE Community Development Fund is proud to partner with New York Cares in running an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) class at our Flushing office.

The class sessions run once a week and matches between 10-20 students with dedicated and energetic volunteers from New York Cares. These volunteers help build the speaking confidence of our students through simply holding a conversation and going over with them the nuances of learning English.

These students, after improving their English proficiency, have often gone on to successfully pass their naturalization interview.

Real Estate Tax Appeal Seminar – February 1st

As we start a new year, the tax season is slowly approaching. Many new property owners are unfamiliar with the real estate tax policies and the tax system of New York City. AAFE Community Development Fund has been working for many years to empower immigrants in becoming familiar with the financial system and helping real estate owners understand how to reduce their property taxes. AAFE CDF will be holding a free seminar to explain how homeowners can appeal and reduce their property taxes in the upcoming year.

Specialist, Jay Goldberg, will be available to speak to building owners and address their issues or concerns in regards to their property taxes. AAFE CDF staff will be assisting with translation in Chinese.

Members of the community, general public, and media are encouraged to attend the free seminar to obtain free information and ask questions.

Queens Thanksgiving Day Celebration – November 19th

AAFE Community Development Fund has been partnering with New York Cares to provide citizenship preparation for members of the community. These free services, which include mock interviews, English conversation, and American civics education, have empowered many immigrants to start their path in achieving the American dream. AAFE and New York Cares’ Citizenship Preparation Program works weekly to make students more confident with the use of the English language, prepare them for the Citizenship Test, and empower them to become a productive member of society.

This year, AAFE CDF will host a Queens Thanksgiving Day Party at our Flushing office to show our appreciation for these volunteers. A ceremony will be held to thank volunteers for their services to the community and to celebrate accomplishments of citizenship preparation students

Homebuying Seminar – October 22

Housing for new immigrants is an important step to achieving the American dream. Our Homebuying Seminar will educate prospective home buyers on how to find a new home, where to look, and how to gauge the potential of a new home. Live lectures will also be given by homeownership experts to provide information on FHA, SONYMA, First Time Homebuyers Club and other government sponsored programs.

Grand Street Fire – One Year Report

April marked the one-year anniversary of the seven-alarm Grand Street fire that blazed on April 11, 2010, destroying three apartment buildings and leaving hundreds of victims homeless. Since the fire, AAFE has raised more than $16,000 for the Grand Street Fire Fund, which helped displaced tenants replace valuable identification and documentation during the immediate aftermaths of the fire. Funds have been subsequently used to provide legal assistance to tenants seeking compensation for fire-related damages. AAFE will continue to support and provide any available assistance that the tenants may need.
